Our First Backcountry Packing Experience with Llamas

Starring Kalypso and Captain Eo.

Hi, I'm Kevin Kemp. Please join my family, Nan, Robyn, Hayley and myself, oh yes, and Gus, the Golden Retriever, on our adventure into the Uinta Wilderness with the help of our llama friends. We first learned about llama packing last year when we met a forest ranger in north slope of the Uinta Wilderness, in Utah. He had two llamas with him to carry his gear. He told us about the benefits of using llamas. Basically, their less trouble than a dog and they don't require you to take food or water for them. Llamas can usually carry about 60 to 80 pounds depending of the size and age of the llama.

This Spring we attended a seminar at REI on using llamas as pack animals. By the time we went home, I was ready to buy a couple of llamas. While we were there, we met Craig and Rita Miller of Francis Utah. Craig taught most of the seminar. We talked to him about renting a pair of his llamas. This August we finally did it. These folks were very friendly and taught us what we needed to know to take the llamas backpacking. They provided all of the packing gear (panniers, saddles, coolers etc.) and even the transportation to the trailhead.

I took a bunch of photographs of our trip and wish to share them with you. I'll try to tell a little about the photos too.

Thanks Craig and Rita, for being so nice and helpful. Thanks to you and your llamas, we had a fantastic time. We miss Kalypso and Captain Eo. I don't know how I'll ever backpack without them.
