Consoles
A popular alternative to a computer is a digital recording console. These units are cost effective and have most of what you need built in, such as preamps, the mixer, and effects. Most units even allow you to write your recordings straight to CD.
The only additional equipment you need are the microphones, cables, and possibly a compressor. There is a large selection of consoles on the market and their capabilities vary widely.
If you are planning to purchase a digital console, be sure the unit you are buying will serve your future needs. Pay close attention to how many channels the console can record simultaneously.
If you are planning to do live recordings, digital recording consoles are hard to beat because of their portability.
