Computers
I recommend using a PC equipped with at least a Pentium III, Athlon,
or Duron CPU and at least 128 mb of RAM. You will probably want at least
10 to 20 gig of disk space for your recordings. These are modest requirements
by today's standards.
If you prefer to use a Mac, I recommend at least a G3 with OS9.
Your computer needs an audio interface card (also called a sound card).
Most consumer-level sound cards have only 2 channels and perform only
16-bit recording. Although I don't recommend using these cards, you can
use them to get started and see what digital recording is all about. There
are plenty of 4-channel and 8-channel cards on the market. If you are
on a tight budget you can get by with a 4-channel card but make sure that
your card is capble of 24-bit recording. If you have plenty of money and
you plan to record a band, I recommend an 8-channel card.
Keep in mind that with 8 channels you will need twice as many mics, preamps
and cables.
